You're correct. You will be able to use your existing flying mount by level 77. At least that is the current plan. There will a yet undecided 'attunement' to use it, hopefully it won't be a lame moneysink: Flying Mounts in Northrend

In northrend you must be level 77 to buy the Cold weather flying skill which costs 1000 gold, then whether you have an epic flying or non-epic flying mount you can fly it. hope this helps
