Hey, the chat box at the bottom left of my screen isn't showing any chat!
even when i go into a major city nothing comes up on the box. the arrows to scroll up and down are still there but no text comes up.
how do i fix it?

The case might be that you've activated the Combat Text Tab of the chat box. Hold your mouse over the chat box and it should highlight a 'General' and a 'Combat' tab, select the one on the left (I believe it's General) and the text should reappear.
If the left most tab is already selected, you can right click it and go to settings. In the settings there are different filters that might be enabled/disabled. Check those out.
If the problem persists, you can go to your World of Warcraft folder, which is typically: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft and delete the WTF folder. This folder contains all sorts of configuration you've set, so delete it at your own risk.

I had the same issue and it was an addon conflict.
